Sheridan College men’s basketball promotes Ball to head coach

Sheridan College announced today that Cody Ball was named the new men’s basketball head coach for the Generals. Ball replaces Matt Hammer who accepted a position as head coach at Colorado State University – Pueblo in April.

Ball has served as an assistant coach at Sheridan College for five seasons and coached at the college level for eight seasons. He was an assistant coach at Northwest College in Powell, Wyo., for two seasons and for Mount Marty College in Yankton, S.D., for one season.

During his tenure at Sheridan College, Ball helped guide the Generals to an overall record of 108-53. The last two seasons have been two of the most successful in program history with 28-5 and 31-4 records, respectively. These teams also earned two Region IX North championships and competed in the NJCAA national tournament this past March.

“I’m excited about having Cody on board as the head coach,” said Athletic Director Rich “Bubba” Hall. “He is familiar with the college and the community. Cody also has a great sense for the game, is committed to Sheridan College basketball and eager to continue a winning tradition.”

Originally from Evanston, Ball was a member of the 2004 Wyoming 4A state championship basketball team that had a 23-2 record. He began his college basketball career at Montana State University - Northern where he was a member of the 2007-08 Frontier Conference regular season co-champions.

Ball then transferred to Northwest College to play for the Trappers during the 2008-09 season and finished his career at Mount Marty College where he served as team captain his final season.

Ball holds an associate degree and coaching certificate from Northwest College as well as a bachelor’s degree in English writing and a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Mount Marty College. He recently graduated from the University of Wyoming with his Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration.

“I am honored to be chosen as the next head coach of the Sheridan Generals men’s basketball team,” said Ball.

“Sheridan College is a very special place to me, and I will do all that I can to ensure that the Generals continue to be a nationally competitive program. Coach Hammer has left this program in a great situation, and I intend to build upon the successes that the previous Generals teams have achieved in the last few seasons.”
