Rockies Snap Two-Game Slide

DENVER (AP) - Juan Nicasio allowed three singles over eight innings and Mark Ellis had three hits, including a two-run homer, in his Colorado debut as the Rockies beat the slumping Kansas City Royals 9-0 on Friday night.

Troy Tulowitzki connected on a two-run homer, Todd Helton added a two-run double and pinch-hitter Charlie Blackmon lined the first homer of his major league career - on his 25th birthday, no less - to help the Rockies snap a two-game slide. Nicasio (3-1) struck out four and got the Royals to hit into 16 groundouts. The Royals lost their fourth straight.

(AP) - Shortstop Derek Jeter is scheduled to return to
the New York Yankees' active roster next week, which doesn't give fill-in Eduardo Nunez much more time to make a strong impression. Nunez did pretty well Friday night, producing his first career four-hit game and driving in a run to help the Yanks beat the Mets
5-1. The Red Sox used a six-run seventh to turn a 5-1 deficit into a 7-5 triumph at Houston. Adrian Gonzalez hit a go-ahead two-run double after Dustin Pedroia drove in a pair of runs during the big rally.

In other interleague play, Nelson Cruz celebrated his 31st birthday by hitting a three-run homer and collecting six RBIs to lead Texas to a 15-5 romp over Florida.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Mark Martin will start from the pole for today's Coke Zero 400 at Daytona. Martin became the eighth NASCAR driver to win 50 career poles when he turned a fast lap of 182.065 mph to knock Trevor Bayne from the top spot. Clint Bowyer and Jeff Gordon make up the second round, just ahead of David Ragan and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - NFL labor talks are expected to resume after July 4 following a four-day negotiating session this week. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and players' association chief DeMaurice Smith met for a couple of hours yesterday following a 15-hour session.
