In its 30th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, announced Christian Mayer of Big Horn High School as its 2014-15 Gatorade Wyoming Football Player of the Year
.
Mayer is the first Gatorade Wyoming Football Player of the Year to be chosen from Big Horn High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Mayer as Wyoming’s best high school football player.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound senior wide receiver caught 41 passes for a state single-season record 1,116 yards and 17 touchdowns this past season, leading the Rams (11-1) to the Class 2A state championship game.

Mayer averaged 27.2 yards per reception and also rushed the ball 19 times for 275 yards.

A two-time First Team All-State selection, he was named Offensive Player of the Year on the Casper Star-Tribune Super 25 team.

Mayer has maintained a 3.93 GPA in the classroom.

Also a track and field standout, he is a member of the National Honor Society and has volunteered locally on behalf of youth sports programs.

“Mayer is a game-changer in every way,” said Larry Yerardi, head coach at Wright High. “He has tremendous speed and he’s a defensive coordinator’s nightmare—they use him in every capacity they can.”

Mayer remains undecided on a collegiate destination.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport.

The selection process is administered by the Gatorade high school sports leadership team in partnership with USA TODAY High School Sports, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.
