08/20/09 Sports for Thursday

GOLF - The high school golf season opens today with Sheridan High School hosting the first tournament of the season at Kendrick Golf Course. There are 10 teams competing, and the shot-gun start is at 10 o'clock.

The Tongue River and Big Horn golfers will also begin their season today at the Sheridan Invitational. Next Friday, the Tongue River and Big Horn golfers will host their own Invitational at Kendrick.

VOLLEYBALL - The Lady Broncs are well into their first week of camp; they open the season next weekend at the big Invitational tournament in Riverton. Wendy Ruby is back as the Lady Broncs' head coach, and she says they return a good group of players from a year ago, adding that the players did a nice job of putting in the work during the summer to make sure they were ready to hit the court strong this week.

Another positive is that 50 Lady Broncs came out for volleyball this week. And with just a week to go before the first games, they have a lot to get in over the next several days.

The Big Horn Lady Rams' volleyball team will also open their season in Riverton next week, and the Tongue River Lady Eagles will open next week at a tournament in Lovell.

MLB - The Colorado Rockies beat the Washington Nationals 5-4 last night, and remain in the lead in the National League Wild Card race. They also gained a game on the Dodgers in the National League West, and now stand just 3 1/2 games back.

NFL - The Denver Broncos will play their next pre-season game Saturday night in Seattle. You can hear the game live on AM 1410 KWYO beginning at 5:30. The Broncos play their first pre-season home game on the 30th against the Chicago Bears with former quarterback Jay Cutler.
