Former Cheyenne East all-state basketball player James Johnson was selected in the first round of the 2009 NBA draft last night in New York city Johnson went 16th to the Chicago Bulls. Bulls head coach Vinny Del Negro says they were pleased to get Johnson at number 16. Del Negro says Johnson was always on the Bulls draft radar and is expected to play for the Bulls right away.Next up for Johnson will be playing for the Bulls in NBA summer league games. Johnson's last high school game in Wyoming took place in Sheridan three year's ago during the Wyoming / Montana all-star basketball series.

The Sheridan Troopers opened play yesterday at a tournament in Gillette they played two games yesterday the lost their first game 10-1 against Casper and came back with a better effort but lost the 2nd game 4-3 against Fossil Ridge Colorado head coach Ben Phillips said they got off to a rough start against Oilers.They did play much better in game two but three base running miscues cost them the game.Phillips says this tournament comes at a good time as the players can use these games to get ready for what they'll face at the district and state tournaments.And finally Phillips says it's good for the players to compete against teams from other states.Today they play two more games against teams from Colorado and South Dakota.

In local golf notes the 10th annual “Mo Martini” memorial golf scramble will be played at the Sheridan country club Sunday. The tournament is a four person team scramble players enter as singles and teams will be put together by blind draw prior to the to the shot gun start which will be at 9 am they will have a Calcutta of teams at 8:30 to sign up stop by the Sheridan country club or call the golf shop at 674-8135.

The Sheridan county junior golf program will start their three tournament schedule Monday July 20th.the junior golf program is for boys and girls ages 8-17. The first event will be played at the Sheridan country club on July 20th the fee is 10 dollars per player. Registration forms are available at the Country club, Kendrick golf course and the powder horn. Kendrick will host the juniors July 27th and the season will culminate at the Powder Horn august 4th The final event includes lunch and a swimming party for the players.

The Colorado Rockies were off yesterday they open a weekend Inter-league series at the Oakland Athletics tonight. The “rocks” conclude their nine game road swing Monday through Wednesday next week with a series at the L.A. Dodgers.
