The Team Wyoming Pee Wee hockey team will participate in the USA Hockey National Tournament held just outside Washington DC March 28- April 1st.
Team Wyoming Pee Wees is comprised of 11-12 year old hockey players from USA youth hockey teams around the state of Wyoming, such as the Sheridan Hawks, which plays a 16-game league schedule against other Wyoming teams. This team of 20 players was selected at tryouts back in September and the team has played in 7 tournaments and over 30 games in Billings, Denver, Jackson Hole and Salt Lake City. The team won The DU Junior Pioneer Oktoberfest and Foothills Frightfest Tournaments in Denver on two consecutive weekends and The Jackson Hole New Year’s Tournament.
Most kids never even dream of playing in a National Tournament in any sport and these young men are getting that opportunity according to Coach Kevin Avery.
The team will begin play Wednesday, March 28th taking on the Oklahoma City Oil Kings followed by an Opening Ceremony. Games that follow will be against South Carolina Columbia Cyclones, Nashville Junior Predators and West Virginia Morgantown Blades. How the team does against these opponents will determine whether they will advance to play in the semifinal and possibly championship game. Their results can be followed at:
Not only will the players get to participate in the National tournament, but they will get the educational experience of our Nation’s Capital as various tours have been set up and meetings with US Senator John Barrasso, US Senator Mike Enzi and US Representative Cynthia Lummis in their offices as well as tours of the US Capitol Building and possibly the White House.
Playing for the team from Sheridan this year are Walker Billings, goalie; Jack Chase, forward; Sandis Cook, forward, (kneeleing) and Jesse Cross, forward. Due to a broken arm, Jesse Cross is unable to attend the National Tournament. Kevin Avery of Gillette coaches the team. Assistant coaches are Chris Cook and Scott Newson.
