Larry Wayne "Gus" Gustafson

Larry Wayne “Gus” Gustafson, 71, of Sheridan passed away on Monday, January 11 2010.

Larry was born on January 5, 1939 in Robbinsdale Minnesota to Harold and Hazel Gustafson. Upon graduation from high school Larry joined the US Marine Corps. After discharge from the Marine Corps he married the love of his life, Margie Ulmaniec and said on their first date that he was going to marry her. He did and they were married nearly 50 years. He often said he wished they had many more lifetimes together. They had two children together, Blair Gustafson and Holly Belus. Larry was known as Gus to all his friends and his wife says if she wanted to get his attention she had to call him Gus as he wouldn’t answer to Larry. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, Gus received diplomas under the GI bill for automotive mechanics and mechanical drawing. Gus was an avid wood worker and enjoyed his children and grand children immensely. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and reloading ammunitions. Another great joy of his was restoring antique motorcycles. Gus and his father owned and operated an automotive shop for about 10 years before Gus moved to Wyoming and went to work for Riley Motors as a Service Manager. He then went to work for the Burlington Northern Railroad where he worked as a conductor and a locomotive engineer. He was the union representative for Local 951 of the United Transportation Union for 13 years. He was a member of Lodge 8, the Scottish Rite and Kalif Temple. He was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church for over 40 years and served on the church vestry for three years during that time. He was also a Eucharistic Minister. He joined the Big Brothers/Sisters and he and his “Little” brother have been good friends for about 12 years. His “Little” brother is now a United States Marine and has served in Iraq. Gus especially enjoyed his annual hunting trips with his son and grandsons, his many camping trips with his son-in-law Tom, fishing, shooting and camping with his brothers-in-law. The most important things in Gus’ life were his wife and family. He was adored by them all.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Hazel and Harold. Survivors include his wife, Margie; children Blair (Shelly) Gustafson and Holly (Tom) Belus both of Sheridan, WY; siblings Gary Gustafson and Darlene Egbert of Wisconsin; five grandchildren Riley (David) Cook, Cassidy Belus, Cole, Noah and Grace Gustafson of Sheridan.
