Byron “Barney” William Hastings, 63, of Sheridan passed away on December 7, 2012 at his residence.

Barney was born on January 1, 1949 in Hot Springs, S. D. to Byron and Marceline (McCloskey) Hastings. He was raised in Edgemont, S. D. He graduated from Edgemont High School in 1967. He married Veleare Peterson in 1971. Their daughter Vanessa was born in 1973. They moved to Sheridan in 1984. He later married Paula Ferber in 1998.

Barney worked for the Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad for thirty years. He liked fishing, doing carpentry work, reading, guns, had a special way with animals and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He would help anyone hurting or in need.

Barney is preceded in death by his parents; Byron Hastings, Marceline Barkley, Step father, Lester “Bus” Barkley, his nephew Kelsey Peterson and his brother- in- law Tom Marsh. He is survived by his wife, Paula, daughter Vanessa Hastings ( Adrian Chavez), step-daughters, Lisa (Lee) Tracy, Ann Ferber, sisters, Jackie (Ned) Peterson, Mary Marsh, step sister, Vonna Hlavka, step brother, Tom Barkley, five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and a gathering of friends and family will be held at a later date in the summer of 2013.
