Yellowstone National Park hosted 916,166 visits in August, making it the busiest August on record, surpassing the previous record set back in 2015 by over 61,000 visitors.

Yellowstone Public Affairs Assistant Jonathan Shafer says that the park experienced increased visitation during the days immediately surrounding the solar eclipse that occurred on August 21.

Shafer said that so far in 2017, the park has had over 3.2 million visits, which is slightly down from the same period last year. He talked about the importance of planning for the high number of people in the park at any given time.

Shafer said that the fire danger in Yellowstone is currently very high, and that they encourage visitors to make sure their campfires are cold to the touch before leaving them.
