Wyoming Remembers 8 Students Killed 10 Years Ago

LARAMIE (AP) - Even as Wyoming joined the rest of the nation this week in observing the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the state remembered another tragedy that hit closer to home.

On Sept. 16, 2001, eight University of Wyoming student-athletes were killed in a crash by another UW student who was driving drunk.

The deaths are still remembered by the university, students, faculty, local community and the state through a memorial scholarship, a campus memorial and memorial cross country races.

The university has a strong alcohol awareness program that includes requiring each student to participate in an online alcohol education program before they are allowed to register. They also are subjected to workshops, training sessions and orientation programs that make them aware of alcohol use.
