Wyoming ACT Scores Released

National ACT scores were released last week, and a discouraging report released by the testing company purported that 60 percent of high school graduates aren't prepared for college. The average composite score for Wyoming students was 20.3, while nationwide, the average was 21.1. Wyoming saw improvement in the areas of math and science, but a slight decline in English and reading.

Dr. Paul Williams, director of the Assessment Division at the Wyoming Department of Education, said Wyoming's seemingly mediocre scores actually reflect well on the state as a whole.

The nation as a whole only tested 52 percent of high school juniors, and most of them communicated intention to advance to college.

Out of the eight states that test 100 percent of its students, Wyoming finished in the middle of the pack, with Mississippi scoring the lowest at 19.2, and Illinois scoring highest with a composite of 20.9.
