WHP Confirms Fatal Crash on I-90 Near Gillette

The Wyoming Highway Patrol has confirmed that a one-vehicle crash at milepost 141 on Interstate 90 east of Gillette Tuesday morning, resulted in the death of 27-year-old Gillette resident Matthew N. Schmaljohn.

According to information provided by the Highway Patrol, troopers were dispatched to the area at 6:46 am Tuesday and concluded that Schmaljohn was traveling eastbound on I-90 in a 2001 Dodge Ram, when he exited onto Exit 141 and drifted off the left side of the roadway, before over-correcting the vehicle, causing the truck to overturn.

Schmaljohn was not wearing his seatbelt and died from his injuries sustained at the scene of the crash. Driver inattention or fatigue is being investigated as possible contributing factors to the crash. The crash marks the 39th fatality on Wyoming’s roadways so far this year.
