Sheridan County veterans were treated to a barbecue and hero's raffle and greeted by Wyoming's two U.S. senators at the Sheridan VA Health Care System during the annual Welcome Home event Saturday.

The event was open free to all veterans and their families. Among speakers was Sen. Mike Enzi, who couldn't attend the event in person but did speak via a video.

Sen. John Barrasso also was unable to attend, but sent a message via Daniel Gallegos, military liaison for Wyoming under Barrasso.

Also speaking was Dr. Kathy Berger, who's interim director of the Sheridan VA, who talked about suicide rates among veterans. Dr. Berger said according to national statistics, 20 veterans a day take their own lives.

She asked for the veterans' help in locating veterans and educating them in the services the VA can provide. She said one suicide is too many, and 20 is certainly too many.
