A study on the history of wildfires over the past 2,000 years conducted by the University of Wyoming shows that large wildfires will continue to increase as a result of a warming climate. Geology doctoral degree candidate John Calder and his colleagues studied fire evidence in a northern Colorado wilderness area. He says large wildfires occurred there during a warming period around a thousand years ago.

Calder said temperature increases over the past few decades are similar to those of that historic warming period, resulting in some of the largest wildfires in U.S. history. He said the research will be published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
