A University of Wyoming scientist was recently part of a research team that discovered the first documented case of a mammal regenerating tissue after shedding its skin. Zoology and Physiology Assistant Professor Jacob Goheen says the discovery was made by accident when researchers trapped mammals while studying the ecology of African savannas.

Goheen says the African spiny mice likely shed their skin to avoid predators.

The research findings were published this week in Nature, an International Journal of Science.
