Traveling Healthy

Traveling, especially long distances, presents its share of problems for those looking to stay fit. Local Health Coach and Fitness Nutrition Specialist Erin Nitschke says travel, either by vehicle or plane, can be a stressful situation, which can lead to several unhealthy habits.

Nitschke said that staying hydrated while traveling doesn’t always have to consist of drinking a lot of water, as eating certain fruits can help keep you hydrated as well.

Nitschke said that other good tips are to take occasional breaks if you’re driving long distances, typically every couple of hours you should pull over and get out and walk for 5 minutes. She said to pack healthy snacks to avoid the temptation of convenience store food, and if you’re staying at a hotel, take advantage of their fitness center if they have one and get in a 30 minute workout prior to embarking on the next leg of your journey.
