How businesses can prepare – and how Sheridan Travel and Tourism can help them prepare – for next year's tourist season was the focus of the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce luncheon Wednesday.

Shawn Parker, who's executive director of Sheridan Travel and Tourism, said the core strength of travel and tourism in Sheridan is the area's history and culture, lifestyle and heritage and outdoor recreation.

Parker said the signs for tourism are very, very positive. The Sheridan-WYO Rodeo, for example, set a new attendance record this year, and there are events nearly every weekend from May through October.

Parker's recommendations for businesses included extending their operating hours. The busiest time for tourists, he said, is between 4 and 6 p.m., and 35 percent of all purchases happen between 4 p.m. and midnight.

Parker said businesses should encourage their customers to post reviews and consider allowing them to take photos in and around the businesses to post on social media.

Sheridan Travel and Tourism can help businesses, Parker said, and businesses should keep the organization up to date on their news. He said tour operators are always looking for what's new in the communities they visit.

Parker also recommended digital advertising, noting that digital advertising campaigns can cost as little as $5 a day. He told the business owners at the luncheon to keep their reviews up to date, and make sure they're online.
