Susan Thomas urged Sheridan College graduates to participate in society in a positive way.

Speaking at college commencement ceremonies Saturday afternoon, she told the graduates to choose wisely.

Led by bagpipers and drummers, several hundred graduates marched from the Whitney Building to the Bruce Hoffman Golden Dome where ceremonies were held.

Dr. Paul Young, who's president of the Northern Wyoming Community College District, said more than 800 certificates and associates' degrees were awarded at Sheridan College and at Gillette College where graduation ceremonies were held Friday.

Dr. Young said this was his 15th graduation at Sheridan College since he started work as a vice president in 2005. This is also his last graduation ceremony since he's retiring in July.

Honorary associates degrees were also awarded to Mary Ellen McWilliams and, posthumously, to the late John Schiffer, who served 22 years in the Wyoming Senate. Nancy Schiffer, the late senator's widow, accepted the degree on his behalf.

She said she thought the award was wonderful.

She said he would be honored by the degree – and honored as well by Sheridan County School District 2's John C. Schiffer Collaborative School. She said the Schiffer school has been a wonderful success.

In earlier activities Saturday, Sheridan College's nursing graduates received their pins in ceremonies in Kinnison Hall, and dental hygiene graduates were recognized in later ceremonies also in Kinnison Hall.
