The new Wyoming Teacher of the Year credits the principal and other teachers at his school for helping him realize his potential.

As Sheridan Media reported earlier, Ryan Fuhrman, a seventh grade science teacher and instructional facilitator at Sheridan Junior High School, was announced as the state's premier teacher in an assembly at the junior high school Friday morning. He said the award was due to help he's received along the way.

Fuhrman knew for about a week that he was a finalist for the state award, but he said he didn't know he actually won until his name was announced Friday morning. The announcement came from Sheridan County School District 2 Superintendent Craig Dougherty, who talked about the quality of Sheridan's teachers after the awards presentation.

Dougherty said teachers work together in School District 2.

Dougherty said Fuhrman was one of two finalists for the teacher of the year honor. And he recalled when he was contacted by state officials.

Fuhrman said the award surprised him.

Dougherty said each building in a district nominates a candidate for teacher of the year.
