Yesterday we began a series highlighting information from the Sheridan County Suicide Prevention Coalition as they get ready to observe Suicide Prevention Week September 5th – 11th. Two members of the coalition, Vanessa Hastings with Northern Wyoming Mental Health and counselor Dawn Sopron were guests on the August 23rd edition of Public Pulse.

Today, we're highlighting information they told us about the increasing rate of suicides among military veterans. Hastings shared this startling statistic.

Hastings says that a big reason for such an alarming number stems from post traumatic stress disorder. And Sopron adds that there is also a unique factor to recent conflict injuries.

Sopron says those types of injuries contribute to lowered inhibitions and impulse control.

And Hastings says the Sheridan VA Medical Center is working hard to address this critical issue.
