After three years of construction and remodeling, Saturday was the grand reopening of the Story Fish Hatchery and the public showed up as Game and Fish representatives showed off the facility.

Over 1000 people showed up for the grand reopening which included guided tours on the half hour, a video presentation every quarter hour, and a raffle for the kids to win a fishing pole.

Assistant Superintendent Brad Welch explains the primary purpose of the Story Fish Hatchery.

The hatchery has five different brood stocks: brook trout, brown trout, lake trout, Eagle Lake Rainbow trout, and the golden trout. The golden trout has been an economic windfall for the Story Hatchery.

New raceways, improved water systems, the fish hatchery has a new brood building where the large brood fish have been moved. Fish sunburn in shallow waters and the new building protects the fish from the sun but also from predators.

The Story Fish Hatchery was originally build in 1909.
