Story Fire Dept. Invests Education In Firefighters

Story Fire Deptarment Fire Chief Mike Onstott will travel to the Wyoming Fire Academy in Riverton this month to complete his certification as a level one firefighter.

He will join two other members of the Story Fire Department who are currently certified. Additionally, three other volunteer firefighters will complete wilderness first aid training in the coming weeks. Onstott explained the Story Fire Department fills many roles because they are often the first responders to emergency situations in their area.

Onstott said the Story Fire Department's average response time is around five minutes, whereas any police or ambulatory backup from Sheridan arrives in about 20 minutes.

Those calls average out to two or three a week. Onstott emphasized the department is always in need of qualified volunteers.
