A project that involves building a wooden platform over wetlands in the South Park recreation area, located in Sheridan, will be completed in the next two weeks.

The platform is part of the South Park Concept Master Plan established in 2009. The plan outlines what city officials want to do with the 40 acres of land the city acquired along Little Goose Creek between Brundage Lane and Sheltered Acres Park the year before. City Engineer Lane Thompson explained what the plan involves.

Local company O’Dell Construction is heading the $209,000 project, which according to Thompson is going to be completed within the city’s budget.

The land has been labeled as a “natural area” by the city,he said, and plans to expand the area beyond the platform are in place.

According to the plan, the area currently supports a wide range of wildlife including deer, turkeys, pheasants, ducks and numerous species of bird. The area is also linked to Sheridan’s recreation pathway system that runs throughout the city.
