SMH Finalizing Integration of EMR

Sheridan Memorial Hospital is in the final working stages of implementing a new system of electronic medical records.

Next week, key personnel from most of the hospital's major departments will be participating in exercises to work out the bugs of the new system. The hospital is scheduled to go live with the new electronic records next month. Nyle Morgan, chief information officer at the hospital, explains what the new system will do.

Morgan said the new electronic system allows multiple people to access the same medical file simultaneously, and streamlines administrative processes to help hospital staff spend time doing more important tasks.

The implementation of electronic medical records stems from a federal mandate that will ultimately cost the hospital $9.7. However, once the program is fully integrated, the hospital may be eligible to get up to $3 million back in incentives over the course of three years.
