SMH Budget Accounts For Millions in “Bad Debt”

The Sheridan Memorial Hospital board of trustees approved the FY 2013-2014 budget Wednesday.

Among items of interest on the budget, bad debt and charity care were among the biggest compensations. Hospital CEO, Mike McCafferty, explains bad debt.

McCafferty said the hospital can work with those who are overwhelmed by their hospital bills.

Seven million dollars of debt equates to approximately $350 for every person in the city of Sheridan. McCafferty said much of that debt is accumulated because many uninsured people use the emergency room as their primary form of care, knowing they cannot be turned away.

Another big consideration in the budget was the implementation of the Electronic Medical Records system. We'll have more information on the EMR next week.
