Slash Piles in Big Horns Slated for Burn

Plumes of smoke may be seen over the Big Horns in coming weeks. Forest firefighters will be burning slash piles in areas around Red Grade Road. The piles scheduled for burning are located at Swamp Creek, Big Goose Ranger Station, Spear-O-Wigwam, Coffeen Park, and along the road into Dome Lake.

According to a news release from the forest service, burning will occur only when sufficient snow is on the ground to minimize the chance for a fire to spread. Smoke may linger in the drainages in the evenings and may be visible from Sheridan and to people recreating in the area.

The slash piles are the product of fuels reduction projects that are designed to increase the defensibility of structures and access routes. For more information about slash pile burning along Red Grade, contact the Tongue Ranger District in Sheridan. The number is posted below.
