Sheridan High School's We the People team won its fifth consecutive state championship in competition earlier this week in Laramie.

We the People sponsor Mike Thomas said the win means that the team will now compete in the national We the People finals, which will be held in Washington D.C. on the last weekend in April. Thomas said We the People was created in 1987.

Thomas said there are currently 25 students on the Sheridan High School team.

He said the team is part of the high school's Advanced Placement American government and politics course. Students who take the course are required to participate in the We the People program.

Thomas said to get to the state competition, students first competed in a regional event in Casper. He said there were 13 or 14 teams in that event. The top six teams from the region then go to the state competition.
