Sheridan High School, with help from some other schools in the area, is aiming to collect 5,000 cans of food to help local families.

Grace Gustafson, who's president of the high school's junior council, explained.

Gustafson said there's also a contest, with the top grade of each elementary school receiving donuts if they donate the most cans to the drive for the week.

She said the high school is holding a raffle, and all the students in the class that brings the most cans will receive a ticket which enters them in a drawing for a $100 gift card. And, she said, the top class at the end of the food drive will also get donuts.

Gretchen McCafferty, who's the student council advisor, said the cans will be donated to the People Assistance Food Bank and to the homeless shelter.

Gustafson said the food drive started about a week ago and will continue through Dec. 15. She said some of the elementary schools plan to continue collecting food until Dec. 22 when classes dismiss for the holiday break.
