Sheriff’s Office Issues Scam Alert

A phone scam is making the rounds in Sheridan County. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.

Late Friday afternoon the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert to Sheridan County residents about a recent scam that’s been circulating throughout the area. According to information provided by the Sheriff’s Office, unknown suspects are calling people and posing as a deputy from the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office. The suspects are using the names of deputies who work with the Sheriff’s Office and are informing people that they have an outstanding warrant.

The victims of the scam are then purchasing prepaid money cards and reading the card numbers back to the suspects over the telephone. The suspects are then having the victims mail the cards back to the Sheridan County Courthouse. The Sheriff’s Office reminds people that no employee of the Sheriff’s Office will ever ask for money over the phone. If you happen to receive one of these calls and are unsure if it is a scam or not, you should hang up and call local law enforcement.
