Sheridan Team to Compete in Culinary Competition

A team from Sheridan High School is one of the six teams chosen to participate in this year's Taco John's High School Culinary Competition.

The 10th annual event will start at 8 a.m. Thursday at Taco John's International Headquarters in Cheyenne. Other teams chosen from 49 entries collected this year are Cheyenne East, Cheyenne Triumph and Pine Bluff, Riverton and Glenrock high schools.

The annual culinary contest allows high school classes from across the state to compete in creating the next food item on Taco John's corporate menu. Bob Karisny, vice president of menu strategy and innovation for Taco John's International, said the submitted recipes are reviewed by an internal team to determine which items have the best chance at making the menu. He said the top six recipies are selected, and the teams that created them are invited to participate in the competition.

On Thursday, each team will have 90 minutes to build that team's recipe. On completion, the team will present the food item to a panel of judges and answer a series of questions. Karisny said the teams will be graded on six main points, including creativity, flavor, overall fit with the Taco John's menu, research and development process, overall presentation and teamwork.

Members of the winning team will each receive a $500 scholarship. Individuals on the second-place team will each receive $250 scholarships. The winning food item could be placed on the menu in Taco John's 11 corporate stores for 30 days and, if the food item is a hit, Karisny said it could go national and be placed in all of the nearly 400 Taco John's locations across the country.
