Sheridan School District 1 Frustrations with the School Facilities Commission

The February meeting of the Sheridan County District 1 Board of Trustees was more of an informational meeting than one of much action, as Trustees and Superintendent Sue Belish discussed the ongoing frustrations with the Wyoming School Facilities Commission and changes they've been implementing on the Big Horn High School and Elementary School construction project.

According to Belish's Facility Update, the SFC has decided that the allocated square foot for the entire Big Horn Campus, based upon a 454 student projection, is 114,000 square feet. The building under construction is 103,000 square feet, which leaves 11,000 square feet for the elementary school. The District had determined that at minimum, they needed 20,000 square feet. The District has been dealing with the SFC for a number of years now, first with Tongue River. But that project, Belish remembers.

Belish says it's difficult to know with whom to speak, what to do, in whom to have faith. She adds, however, that our local legislators have been very supportive. She and five other District representatives will be heading to the Legislative Forum in Cheyenne next week, and she tells us what she hopes will come from that trip.

Belish says that District 1 isn't the only district in the state which has had struggles with the School Facilities Commission, but they've been "loud about it" -- adding that if a plan has been approved, the plan should be completed based upon that approval.
