Sheridan Man Charged in 2-Boat Collision on South Dakota Reservoir

67-year-old Joseph Kosma of Sheridan has been charged with a misdemeanor count of Reckless Operation of a Boat, in papers filed earlier last month by the Fall River County, South Dakota State's Attorney.

On July 4th, Kosma was driving a speedboat on the Angostura Reservoir south of Hot Springs, SD when he collided with another speedboat driven by Chad Collins of Rapid City, SD.

Kosma told investigating SD Game, Fish and Parks officials that he estimated he was going 50 mph when his boat struck Collins' boat. Kosma's boat sank immediately and was located and pulled out two weeks later by Fall River County rescue divers.

A passenger in Collins' boat sustained a head injury in the accident and was life-flighted to Rapid City Regional Hospital. Kosma received fractured ribs and a bruised lung. Collins was not seriously injured.

Neither Kosma nor Collins had been drinking prior to the incident.

Reckless Operation of a Boat is a Class I misdemeanor, punishable by up to 12 months in jail or a $2,000 fine or both.
