History happened shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday in Sheridan.

That was when a tap was unveiled at Black Tooth Brewing and Mark Demple, great-grandson of the man who helped launch a brewing company in Sheridan in 1887, drew the first glass of Sheridan Beer.

Demple's great-grandfather, Peter Demple, along with Arnold Tschirgi and George Paul, founded the Sheridan Brewing Company and manufactured Sheridan Beer – with the exception of the Prohibition years – until 1952.

At that time, Mark Demple said, the brewing company switched to making a canned soft drink beverage, but that fell victim to the Coca Cola company, and the Sheridan Brewing Company closed.

Demple said he and others have talked for some time about bringing back Sheridan Beer.

Demple said there was no recipe for the original Sheridan Beer. But he said the talent at Black Tooth is pretty amazing, and the brewmaster there developed a beer that would have probably been available and that could have come out of Bavaria, the part of Germany that his great-grandfather came from.

He said the Black Tooth Sheridan Beer has been tagged as a golden ale.

To continue the unveiling celebration, at 8 p.m. Saturday, a keg of Sheridan Beer was conveyed by wheelbarrow to the Mint Bar.

Demple said the first barrel of Sheridan Beer brewed in 1887 was delivered by wheelbarrow to a bar on Main Street.

Demple said he was unable to learn where that first wheelbarrow of beer was delivered. But, he said, his great-grandfather's stepson had a saloon on Main Street, so he thinks that was probably where the beer was delivered.
