Sentencing Pending in Stolen Car Case

Sentencing is pending in district court in Sheridan for a man charged with being in possession of a stolen car.

36-year-old Jeremy McCarty pleaded no contest in court Thursday morning. Judge John Fenn has ordered a pre-sentencing investigation.

A plea agreement is involved, under which McCarty would be sentenced to 90 days in jail followed by two years of supervised probation in exchange for his plea. The judge reminded McCarty that, while courts frequently pass sentences in accordance with plea agreements, they are not bound by such agreements.

Charging documents filed against McCarty allege that he was stopped for speeding in Sheridan County last month, and at that time, he told offers he had been given the car in Denver. Officers later learned that the vehicle had been stolen in Colorado. The charging documents also allege that, at the time of his arrest, McCarty was driving with a suspended license.
