Senator to Yank Bill on Life Sentences

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - A Wyoming state senator says he intends to pull a bill he had sponsored that would have ended the sentence of life without parole.

Sen. Bruce Burns, R-Sheridan, had sponsored a bill that would have removed the sentence of life without parole from state law. The punishment is currently reserved for first-degree murder convictions or repeated sex offenses.

Burns said Friday he sees problems with the legislation and intends to pull it.

Burns said he had intended his legislation to keep the sentence of life without parole on the books, but change the law to allow the governor to commute the sentence for people who receive it.
