School Trustees to Review Gun Policy

Trustees of Sheridan County School District 1 are expected to review the district's policy regarding guns and other weapons at their meeting next week.

The board meeting will be at 6 p.m. in Big Horn. Trustees Chair Gary Reynolds said the board is trying to determine the best action to take when students bring guns to school.

He said sometimes students bring guns when they've been hunting before school or when they plan to go hunting after school.

Reynolds said he doesn't know at this time whether trustees will discuss the contract of District Superintendent Marty Kobza next week. Trustees review administrative contracts yearly, including the superintendent's contract.

But, he said, the review might come at the February meeting rather than now. Also yet to be determined is whether trustees will handle the contract review in open or executive session. A decision on contract renewal must be made in open meeting, but Reynolds said trustees have the option of discussing the contract in executive session.
