Scam Alert: Bogus IRS Emails

The Internal Revenue Service is warning the public about a national-level scam making its rounds across the country involving bogus emails supposedly from the IRS. Sheridan Media's Chris Foy has the story.

The emails turn out to be phishing attempts, where the scammers attempt to trick the recipient into revealing detailed personal and financial information.

Karen Connelly, spokesperson for the IRS, says the scammers will use the IRS name and logo in an attempt to make the email appear authentic. But she says the IRS will never contact taxpayers by email. If you happen to receive unexpected communication from someone claiming to be with the IRS, she says call the agency at 800-829-1040 to verify if the IRS is really trying to get in touch.

Additionally, Connelly says recipients of the bogus email should not reply to the message, avoid opening any attachments or clicking any links and do not divulge any confidential personal or financial information.
