River Cleanup Nets 1 Million Pounds of Trash

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - Organizers of a cleanup project on the North Platte River are at the same time elated and appalled.

They're elated that in three years, the Platte River Revival has removed more than 1 million pounds of trash from the river. But Jolene Martinez, the event's organizer, says a million pounds of trash in the river is nothing to glorify.

Organizers say about 600 volunteers took part in the 3rd Annual event Saturday in Casper. Earlier this year, the Casper City Council committed to a master plan to identify key projects in the river's future. Councilman Paul Bertoglio says officials want to recognize the river as one of the city's treasures and make it a centerpiece.
