Restore or Build New? Debate Divides the Town of Recluse

Recluse, WY (Wyoming News Service) - An historic community hall in Recluse, WY, located about 40 miles east of Clearmont, is at the center of a controversy. Residents started gathering donations and grants to restore the community hall, but some abandoned the idea in favor of a new building when projected expenses rose.

Mary Humstone with the Alliance for Historic Wyoming says the original structure is an example of a community united, not divided. She says local residents constructed it in the 1930's using logs from the Powder River Breaks.

Humstone says historic structures provide a sense of place that is hard to put a price tag on.

While one line of thinking is that Recluse could have a new community hall and restore the old one, Humstone says there just isn't enough money to do both at this point. Also, most of the funds raised so far are dedicated to restoration.
