Prescribed Burns Planned for Fall

Several prescribed burns are planned for this fall, depending on favorable weather conditions over the next few months.

That's according to Bighorn National Forest Supervisor Andrew Johnson, who said the burns are being conducted to reduce fuel loadings, improve wildlife habitat and increase range forage. He said the burns target over-mature sagebrush and conifer encroachment into shrublands and meadows.

Burns are planned on the Medicine Wheel District for the Beaver Creek area near Hunt Mountain and in the Matthews Ridge area northeast of Hyattville. Johnson said about 500 total acres of burning may occur within these areas.

He said burns are planned on the Powder River Ranger District in the Tensleep Canyon and Canyon Creek areas, also totaling about 500 acres.
