Prescribed Burn Planned 4 Miles West of Sundance

Bearlodge Ranger District officials are planning to conduct a prescribed burn tomorrow and Thursday, November 1 in the Black Hills National Forest. The burn will take place approximately 4 miles northwest of Sundance on Warren Peak Highway.

Crews with the Black Hills National Forest plan to burn close to 71 acres in one area and 109 acres in another. One or both of these units will be burned on consecutive days, according to a press release.

Officials expect smoke from the burn to be visible from local communities in the Sundance area, and depending on the weather, even as far away as Gillette and Spearfish.

Engine Captain Shane Phillips says prescribed fires help protect lives, property and living forests from large fires in the summer. During periods of cooler weather, burning areas of the forest improves forest health by recycling carbon and nutrients into the soil and controlling forest insects.

Phillips and other highly trained fire managers and firefighters will be on-scene to conduct this burn both tomorrow and Thursday.
