P.E.O., or Philanthropic Educational Organization of Buffalo, is a chapter of the P.E.O. International that awards scholarships, grants, awards and other help to women to advance their educations.

The idea is to help those “non-traditional” students to continue their education.

The Buffalo chapter has awarded more than $85,000 to local women over the last 10 years, according to Tammy Kramer, with the local chapter. They also donate to many local charities every year, she said.

This year the organization awarded scholarships to six women, three of whom are enrolled in the nursing program at Sheridan College, and three others that are continuing their educations elsewhere. The scholarships are not based on financial need, but many different factors.

The three women enrolled in the nursing program received their awards in a short ceremony Monday afternoon at Sheridan College in Johnson County.

They are Vonda Roberts, Melissa Durden and Heather Gilbert, who received $200 each, which they can use as they see fit, according to Kramer.

The other three haven't been informed of their awards yet, and so were not identified by Kramer.

P.E.O. Also awards a local family $500 in gift certificates from Buffalo stores every Christmas.

Kramer said any non-traditional female student interested in scholarships to continue their education can contact P.E.O. In Buffalo at 684-0350.
