Peabody Energy Cuts More Than 200 Employees

Posted in

The Gillette News Record reports that Peabody Energy announced this morning a reduction of workforce at the world's most productive coal mine, the North Antelope Rochelle, by about 235 hourly and salaried employees, citing continued financial difficulties during challenging marketing conditions.

In its announcement of the layoffs, Peabody says the move is necessary for its Powder River Basin operation "to align the workforce with customer needs" as low coal prices and other pressures reduce the demand for thermal coal.

Peabody President Kemal Williamson says in the statement they regret the impact the actions will have on their employees, their families and surrounding communities in Campbell and Converse counties.

The layoffs represent about 15 percent of the 1,150 employee workforce at North Antelope Rochelle. Along with the company's other two Powder River Basin mines — Rawhide and Caballo — Peabody employs about 1,500 workers.
