Following the Pledge of Allegiance, the Boy Scouts' oath and a prayer, the annual Pancake Breakfast opened Friday morning to what Angel Vielhauer expected to be around 2,000 to 3,000 people.

Among those on hand for the breakfast of pancakes, ham, juice and coffee was Mel Kinzeld, who said he's been coming to the breakfast since the first one. Then, of course, he said he planned to stick around for the other events of the morning.

The breakfast is served from 6 til 9 a.m., and Vielhauer, who's the wife of Assistant Scoutmaster Matthew Vielhauer, said the Scouts are on site on Grinnell Plaza starting at 4 a.m.

The event requires a lot of food, she said.

The breakfast was started by the Sheridan Kiwanis Club, and members of Boy Scout Troop 117 helped in putting on the event for several years.

Matthew Vielhauer said this is the third year that the troop has been in charge of the breakfast.
