Not A Typical Year For Property Tax Assessment Appeals

Monday morning, the Sheridan County Commissioners will be hearing several property tax assessment appeals. Commissioner Steve Maier says although most disputes are resolved with the County Assessor earlier on, if the person is not satisfied with that result:

All that will be decided in today's hearings, he says, is whether to move forward with the appeal and to have a contested case hearing at a later date, or to dismiss the appeal. Either way, the person still has the option of going to the State Board of Equalization.

Maier adds this is not a typical year for tax assessment appeals:

Eight appeals are scheduled to be heard Monday morning.

What's wrong with our Assessor's office that a property owner with an old house like mine would receive a 17% increase during a recession when the only "improvement" made to the property during the past four years was a fresh coat of paint in the bathroom? I disputed that assessment, and it was resolved in the Assessor's Office.
