The New VA Smoke-Free Policy

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced their new smoke-free policy that went into effect on October 1st. The policy is made up of two directives, Directive 1085, which is a policy for patients, visitors, contractors, volunteers and vendors at VA Health Care facilities, and Directive 1085.01, which is the policy for employees that work at these facilities. Seth Tippin, a psychologist at the Sheridan VA, explains the reasons for the implementation of the new policy.

The policy includes no smoking in any vehicle on Sheridan VA Medical Center property. It is encouraged for anyone visiting the facility to leave their smoking materials at home. Kristina Miller, Public Affairs Officer for the Sheridan VA, clarifies some points on the policy.
