This week is National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, a week that began in 1981 designated to recognize the effort and work of telecommunicators in emergency services. While their work usually goes unnoticed, Sheridan Police Chief Richard Adriaens says that they are the first responders to all emergency situations.

Congress made a formal proclamation in October 1991 to designate the second week in April as National Public Safety Telecommunications Week.
