Movie Shown At BHS Upsets Some Parents, Students

A movie about women's suffrage shown to history students at Buffalo High School earlier this month has some parents and students concerned that it was allowed to be shown.

The movie, called “Iron Jawed Angels” has a scene that suggests a female masturbating while taking a bath. That scene is what has some parents and students upset.

Dr. Rod Kessler, Superintendent of Johnson County School District One, said the school's 11th grade History class was learning about the 19th Amendment and the film was shown to the classes as a supplementary part of the curriculum.

The teacher has used the film in the past, Kessler said, and has told the students up front about the controversial scene and gives them the opportunity to opt out of watching the film if they so choose.

Kessler said this is the first time there have been any concerns raised.

He explains more about the concerns and how they were addressed.

The concerns of the parents have been addressed, Kessler said, and the school and the district will move forward.
