Montana Man Changes Plea in District Court

A change of plea hearing was held Thursday in Fourth Judicial District Court in Sheridan for 33-year-old Michael Demontiney of Wyola, Montana.

Pursuant to terms of a plea agreement with the State, Demontiney pleaded guilty to the charges of felony shoplifting and misdemeanor shoplifting. He was charged with the crimes in May of this year, when he stole over $1,000 of merchandise from Wal-Mart in Sheridan, and a bottle of alcohol from Rendezvous Liquor. The plea deal calls for a sentence of 2 to 4 years for the felony charge, suspended, in lieu of two years of supervised probation, and 90 days in jail for the misdemeanor charge, suspended in lieu of 6 months of probation.

If the plea agreement is accepted by the Court at sentencing, Demontiney must also pay $1,852 in restitution for the stolen items. District Court Judge John Fenn ordered a presentence investigation and said that a date for sentencing would be set at a later time.
