Mistake Results In $40,000 Change Order On Judicial Center

Miscommunication between the architect and the contractor on Johnson County's new Judicial Center resulted in a $40,290 change order to the project, according to discussions by the Johnson County Commissioners at their last meeting.

The architects, GSG Architecture and Reily Johnson Architects, designed walls in the building with ridges or grooves in the sheet rock that were drawn only partially up the walls in the designs.
When the contractor working for Groathouse Construction began building the walls and laying sheet rock, they built the walls as drawn on the plans, with the grooves only going part of the way up the walls to the ceiling.

Commission Chair Smokey Wildeman brought the issue to the commission for discussions and explained further.

Even with the $40,290 change order, Wildeman explained that the project costs were at $9,142,000 which is still $768,000 under the original estimate of $9,910,000 with a remaining contingency of $495,000.

The commission paid the change order.
